Non-proprietary vs. Proprietary Systems

Does the cell phone in your pocket have better GPS capabilities than your offender tracking system?

If you wouldn't use a ten, or even five, year old computer, why are you using an offender tracking system that is that outdated and not able to be upgraded?

You expect your commercial electronics to work every time when you use them, why is it OK for your offender tracking equipment to have so many out-of-box failures?

With over 15 years of electronic monitoring experience, Lares Technologies recognized that proprietary offender monitoring systems, built from the ground up, become out of date very quickly. The rapid progress in GPS and other tracking technologies, as well as advances in communications and batteries, cannot be implemented in these systems because it requires redesigning the entire system, which is too expensive and time consuming.

To overcome this limitation Lares uses some commercial products, primarily GPS-enabled cellular telephones, along with the BTX Ankle Tether to form the hardware platform of our system. No modification is needed to cellular phone. Competition between cellular phone manufacturers is fierce, so they are always striving for better devices, and prices are kept down. As new mobile phones are introduced with better tracking technology, more memory, faster data speeds, and longer lasting batteries they can be quickly integrated into the system.

By taking this non-proprietary approach, Lares can provide its customers with a GPS offender tracking system in a practical form-factor at a low cost, that will always be state-of-the-art.

Non-Proprietary

Uses some commercially available components
Manufactured by large companies in large quantities: Low Cost, Low out-of-box failures
Ability to switch out one component without affecting the others
Rapid introduction of new technologies
Practical, familiar form factor - No stigma
Agencies less concerned with loss and damage
Software addresses requirements for offenders

Proprietary

Built specifically for offender monitoring
Manufactured by small companies in small quantities: High Cost, High out-of-box failures
Changing one component of system requires redesign of entire system
Slow or no introduction of new technologies
Cumbersome size and shape - Offender identifiable
Fear of loss and damage limit use
Hardware addresses requirements for offenders
